Students from FinTech, BASIS, & SEED engage with high school seniors, transfer students, and fellow Hokies about Finance at Majors Fairs
November 8, 2021
Students and faculty from the Department of Finance, Insurance, and Business Law have participated in the Fall 2021 Majors Fairs to speak with fellow Hokies and incoming Virginia Tech students about our numerous program options. Virginia Tech hosted the first Fall 2021 Majors Fair during Open House on October 2nd and 3rd. An additional Majors Fair on October 6th was hosted by the Academic Advising Initiatives and the Undergraduate Student Senate (formerly Student Government Association (SGA)), providing current VT students an opportunity to explore university programs and identify their best fit or find secondary majors.
On Oct. 2nd - 3rd, the fair was open to high school students and potential transfer students and on Oct. 6th, the fair focused on current VT students. Current and prospective students received first-hand insights about Finance program benefits and features from the tenured faculty who staffed tables and attendant student volunteers majoring in Finance.
With so many different programs and organizations at the university, deciding which areas to focus on can be a daunting task for students. Thankfully, students like Dawson Xiao and Jack Thompson—finance juniors in the FinTech Club—and other students from BASIS & SEED were there to help interested individuals learn more about our cutting-edge programs and organizations.
Both students shared their experiences on the event and what it means to be a part of the Finance program:
Name: Dawson Xiao
Grade Level: Junior
Major: Finance - FinTech & Big Data Analytics
Minor: Computer Sciences
Student Organizations: The FinTech Club
"Finance means to me how to properly invest in yourself financially, educationally, and wisely between yourself and those around you."
Name: Jack Thompson
Grade Level: Junior
Major: Finance - FinTech & Big Data Analytics
Student Organizations: The FinTech Club
"To be part of such a great program and learning from top tier professors not only educates us [as students] but gives me the confidence to move forward with my [own] career knowing I can do anything I choose to do. [Student] Organizations help me work on my interpersonal and management skills and give me a good idea of how much professors put into their own materials."
Department representatives will also attend the next VT Open House for prospective students on Nov. 6th - 7th, 2021. If you are interested in reading more about these fairs, you can learn about the PCOB Majors Fair here and the VT Open House here.
