Biography

Dr. Kadlec's areas of research include: information assimilation in markets, transaction costs, asset pricing, agency conflicts in institutional investment management, and mutual funds. His research is internationally recognized and has had a significant impact on the practice of investment management. In 2000 his study documenting errors in the pricing of mutual fund shares was presented to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and was featured at an academic and practitioner conference held by the Investment Company Institute. In 2013 his paper on mutual fund trading costs was featured in the Economist and received the Graham and Dodd award by the Financial Analysts Journal. Professor Kadlec's research has been presented at Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA) annual meetings, Morningtar, Mutual Fund Directors Forum, National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), Plexus, the Q-group, and numerous academic institutions including Indiana University, Purdue, MIT, University of Chicago, Maryland, North Carolina, Texas, Wharton, and Wisconsin. His research appears on the programs of national finance meetings on a regular basis and is published in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Financial Studies.

Service Related Contributions

Dr. Kadlec's involvement as a Faculty Advisor to SEED (Student-managed Endowment for Educational Development) has played an important role in the placement of Pamplin graduates at the most prestigious investment management firms in the country. He has served on the Faculty Senate, the University Optional Retirement Planning Committee, The College Research Committee, the Ph.D. Policy Committee, and the MBA Curriculum Committee. Dr. Kadlec has served as a referee for the Journal of Business, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and Review of Financial Studies and served on the program committee for numerous regional, national, and international finance conferences. He served as a member of the Board of the FMA Survey and Synthesis Series and Associate Editor at the Journal of Financial Services Research.

Business Experience

He has advised numerous investment management entities including: the Certified Financial Planner Board, Forward Funds, Investment Company Institute, ICI Mutual, Morningstar, and Reflow Management. Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Dr. Kadlec worked in operations research at American Airlines.

Teaching Experience

Winner of department, college, and university teaching awards, Dr. Kadlec teaches courses on investments.
