Biography
Dr. Lithell's research interests are in empirical corporate finance, focusing on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and the relationship between public and private sources of financing. His research addresses questions such as: What role does M&A play in the declining number of US public firms? How do M&A synergy gains differ when targets are listed vs unlisted? Do private-market investors with social-impact goals invest differently from venture capitalists? And, how does valuation uncertainty influence entrepreneurs’ financing preferences? Dr. Lithell’s work has been published in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and presented at major conferences like the Society for Financial Studies (SFS) Cavalcade and the Financial Intermediation Research Society (FIRS) Conference. He teaches courses in corporate finance. He came to Virginia Tech from the Norwegian School of Economics (PhD) by way of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth (Postdoc). He received his MSc from the Norwegian School of Economics and BSc from the Stockholm School of Economics. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking and music.
